  • I’ve got problems with Grisoft’s AVG Free Antivirus again. I’ve always used AVG and Zone Alarm together…?

Posted by admin on November 3rd, 2009 and filed under always something brilliant |

I had to reinstall AVG Free on Sunday after Yahoo Antispy removed it from my computer. Since then AVG has seen Zone Alarm as a threat stating that my Zone Alarm Firewall installer had Trojan Horses in it - 6 to be exact, so, as I didn’t think I needed the shortcut installer for Zone Alarm anymore, I deleted it. Of course I then lost Zone Alarm and my refuse bin was infected with the same 6 Trojan horses, so I removed the lot and everything from the AVG Virus vault. I’ve had to revert back to Windows Firewall as a temporary measure and need some advice please from anyone out there who is very knowledgeable about firewalls. I do run scans and have antispyware programmes on here, so seem well protected. Also I use the clean up facility. Please can you tell me the very best Firewall to use to protect my PC. Zone Alarm has always been brilliant running along quite happily with AVG Free until recently. Yes, I did remove the Microsoft update that caused a conflict a few months ago and everything has been fine. HELP PLEASE, I really would like Zone Alarm back as I’ve been told that Windows Firewall is not as good. I can’t afford to pay for antivirus and firewall and the freeware is very good.

It’s a false positive result from AVG. I had the same problem this morning. The files were moved to the vault but when I read that it was safe to move them back I couldn’t.
What I did was uninstalled Zonealarm, then got AVG to download the latest updates so it should stop the false positive. Then downloaded and reinstalled Zonealarm.

Strange. I’ve had no problems running AVG and ZoneAlarm except for that "misunderstanding" with the Microsoft update you mentioned and which was cleared up fairly quickly.

I’ve got ZoneAlarm 7.0.483.000 and haven’t looked for any updates. Maybe there’s a problem with an update since then ?

ZoneAlarm is very good, and you should definitely have that on your machine. If not try Comodo firewall.
you definitely need to clean out your machine first, make sure you remove every trojan from it. Re-download the free Zonealarm and install it. Instead of AVG I would recommend you get Avast! instead. AVG seems to have a poorer detection engine and giving false positives.
